Thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) is a metabolite of vitamin B1 and a cofactor synthesized in the cytosol. It is essential for maintaining the activity of cytosolic transketolase and mitochondrial acetone acid, ketoglutarate and branched-chain keto acid dehydrogenase. TPP can be used to evaluate the deacidification mechanism in biological systems. TPP can also prevent hyperglycemia-induced retinopathy and desflurane-induced hepatotoxicity in rats.
