Application
The prototype of a family of naturally occurring cobalt coordination compounds called corrinoids. Analogs of vitamin B12 differ only in the β-ligand of cobalt and are called cobalamines. Synthesized almost exclusively by bacteria. Dietary sources include fish, meat, liver, and dairy products; plants contain little or no cobalamine. The body converts it to biologically active forms, methylcobalamin and cobalamine, which act as enzyme cofactors. Severe deficiency may result in megaloblastic anemia and/or neurological dysfunction.
