Application
Tetramethylammonium chloride is a phase transfer catalyst in organic synthesis, with stronger catalytic activity than triphenylphosphine and triethylamine. It is a white crystalline powder at room temperature, volatile, irritating, hygroscopic, soluble in methanol, soluble in water and hot ethanol, and insoluble in ether and chloroform. Heating above 230 ℃ decomposes into trimethylamine and chloromethane. LD50 (mouse, intraperitoneal) 25mg/kg. Also used in the synthesis of liquid crystal epoxy compounds, polarography and pop analysis, electronics industry, etc.
