Application
1. Bioremediation of Toxic Compounds
Environmental pollution is becoming increasingly serious, with increasing numbers of pollutants eroding the very environment on which we depend. Laccase has significant application value in the treatment of many toxic wastes. In addition to degrading lignin, it can also degrade a variety of aromatic compounds and organophosphorus toxicants. The subsequent development of immobilized enzyme technology has further improved enzyme activity recovery and thermal stability. Fungal laccases can degrade a variety of toxic substances in the environment, enabling bioremediation of polluted local environments.
2. Applications in the Paper Industry
Laccases, with their ability to oxidize lignin, are widely used in the paper industry, particularly in biobleaching. Laccases have been reported to be involved in the bleaching of both wood and straw pulps. Experimental studies have demonstrated that laccases, when combined with appropriate mediators, exhibit high selectivity for low-value wood pulp, achieving lignin removal efficiencies of up to 45%.
3. Applications in the Food Industry
Laccases are finding increasing application in the food industry. Laccases are a common enzyme in beverage processing, primarily used for clarification and color control. Furthermore, adding laccase during the seed production process of edible and medicinal mushrooms can accelerate the breakdown of lignin, providing a richer source of nutrients for the mycelium. Experiments have shown that laccase is more effective than peroxidase in the production of luncheon meat and dairy products.
4. Other Applications
Laccase has a wide range of applications in improving fiber properties, bioassays, biofuels, biosensors, decolorization of industrial dyes, and the wood industry.
