Background and Overview
Butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), also known as butyl benzyl phthalate and benzyl butyl phthalate, is an organic compound and an important type of phthalate esters (PAEs) with endocrine disrupting effects. As a PVC plasticizer, BBP is mainly used in vinyl resins, food conveyor belts, carpets, artificial leather and adhesives.
Applications
Butyl benzyl phthalate is a kind of external plasticizer with excellent performance, which is mainly used in plastic products processing and molding process to improve the plasticity and fluidity of resin. And it can also dissolve organic pigments, so that the products have excellent transparency and smooth surface. The product is transparent oily liquid, slightly aromatic flavor, strong solvent capacity, emitting foam performance, excellent oil extraction resistance, good anti-pollution, low volatility, low water extraction and anti-migration, fast plasticizing speed.
Toxicological information
In the past, there have been more studies on the toxicity caused by short-term exposure to large doses of butylbenzyl phthalate. However, it appears that butylbenzyl phthalate exposure is a low-dose, chronic, long-term, or even lifelong process for humans, and its health effects may take a longer time to appear. For females, especially those of childbearing age, who tend to have higher levels of butylbenzyl phthalate than males, butylbenzyl phthalate has the potential to affect the development of the offspring through the placenta and breast milk.
Preparation
In this paper, the preparation process of butylbenzyl phthalate and the problems that have arisen in the middle of the production process have been studied in greater depth. The production principle of butyl benzyl phthalate is through the esterification reaction, phthalic anhydride and butanol to generate monobutyl phthalate, and then neutralized with alkali, the monobutyl sodium phthalate and benzyl chloride in triethylamine-catalyzed condensation reaction to generate butyl benzyl phthalate.
