Application
It is primarily used in the production of naphthenic acid salts; its sodium salt serves as an inexpensive emulsifier, agricultural growth promoter, and detergent in the textile industry; salts of lead, manganese, cobalt, iron, and calcium are used as drying agents in printing inks and coatings; copper and mercury salts are used as wood preservatives, pesticides, and fungicides; and aluminum salts are used in greases, solidified gasoline, and signal flares. Its nickel, cobalt, and molybdenum salts can serve as catalysts and drying agents in organic synthesis; certain salts can also function as additives in specialty oils. High-carbon aliphatic esters of naphthenic acid are suitable for use as precision machinery oils in telephones, watches, and measuring instruments. They can also be used to produce synthetic detergents, insecticides, rubber accelerators, and as solvents.
