Application
L(+)-Tartaric acid is widely used as an acidulant in beverages and other food products, such as wines, soft drinks, confectionery, bread, and certain gel-based sweets. Leveraging its optical activity, it serves as a chemical resolving agent—notably in the resolution of DL-aminobutanol, an intermediate for anti-tuberculosis drugs—and as a chiral starting material for synthesizing tartaric acid derivatives. Its acidity allows it to function as a catalyst for resin finishing on polyester fabrics and as a pH regulator in oryzanol production. Its complexing properties make it useful as a complexing, masking, or chelating agent in electroplating, desulfurization, pickling, chemical analysis, and pharmaceutical testing, as well as a resist agent in printing and dyeing. Its reducing properties enable its use as a reducing agent in chemical mirror manufacturing and as a photographic developer. Additionally, it forms complexes with various metal ions, allowing it to serve as a cleaning and polishing agent for metal surfaces.
