Application
Dimethyl terephthalate is primarily used to manufacture polyester resins—which are subsequently used to produce films, fibers, and high-strength polyester insulating varnishes. Polyester films serve mainly as electrical insulation materials and as substrates for photographic and recording media (such as motion picture film, X-ray film, photographic film, and magnetic tapes for audio, video, and computer data). The most common application of polyester resin is fiber production for use in textiles, fishing nets, carpets, and tire cords. It is also used to produce the plasticizer dioctyl terephthalate.
