Application
Diethyl malonate is an important intermediate in the preparation of 2-amino-4,6-dimethoxypyrimidine and can be used to prepare sulfonylurea herbicides such as bensulfuron-methyl, pyrazosulfuron-methyl, and nicosulfuron. It is also an intermediate in the pharmaceutical production of sulfonamides and barbiturates. It can also be used as a stationary phase in gas chromatography (maximum operating temperature 40°C, solvents such as benzene, chloroform, and ethanol) to assay ammonia and potassium. Furthermore, diethyl malonate is permitted as a flavoring under GB 2760-96, primarily used in the formulation of fruit flavors such as pear, apple, grape, and cherry.
